When Is Your Book Being Published?

If you are serious about establishing yourself as an expert in your field, you should be making plans to publish a book or an e-book. No matter how many White Papers and Special Reports you write and distribute, a book establishes expert credibility of a different order. Didn’t you ever dream of saying to someone, “you can find that in my book”?

Technology has made it possible for you to publish your book in a short span of time. You can publish it in a variety of formats, and it can be any length. The two technologies making publishing faster and more accessible to entrepreneurs and small business owners are e-books and print-on-demand books. You can still try to get a big traditional publishing house to publish your book. You can also self-publish and take the route of “short-run” printing (printing and buying 250 to 500 copies at a time).

Why does a book create the impression of greater expertise and stature? Books, because of the cost associated with production and editing, traditionally have been accepted as greater sources of authority. In traditional publishing houses, books pass through several stages of review and approval, fact checking, editorial review and revision, etc.

A recent article in The Wall Street Journal pointed out the benefits many professionals have recognized by publishing their book. Sarah Needleman, author of the article, also points out that in 2009 764,448 titles written by entrepreneurs and other “nontraditional” authors were published in the U.S. The number of these titles has been increasing exponentially over the past few years.The technologies for both e-book preparation and for print-on-demand publishing are affordable and available. There are few good reasons to hold anyone back from writing and publishing a book. You might consider doing so to increase the number of new clients or customers, to market your business more effectively, or to establish your expertise and credibility. Whatever your reasons, there is a clear advantage in telling people you have written and published a book over saying you have written a white paper or special report.

We recommend a publishing strategy of starting with articles, blogs and white papers. A good communication plan will produce the shorter pieces with a view to combining them into a book.
