The Internet, one of the biggest changes in our lives in recent decades, has changed many aspects of our lives both personally and professionally. Traditional television stations and newspapers compete for the same audience as websites providing news and entertainment online. Businesses such as Amazon market and sell products through their websites worldwide. Emails are quickly replacing letters sent through our postal services and real time communication via various chat programs, and conferencing programs are not only being substituted for telephone conversation or face-to-face meetings, but they offer many conveniences and advantages over traditional meeting methods.
For coaching sessions with my families, I make video calls using Skype. Skype is free to download and use. All that is required is a computer connected to the Internet with Skype installed on it, a webcam, and a microphone and speakers, or a headset with a microphone.
Skype charges for some of its services, but computer-to-computer voice calls and video calls are free.
Video calls with Skype allow me to communicate directly with parents. Unlike communication by email, or even telephone, video calls permit face-to-face communication, a far more personal and effective means of communication. I am also able to communicate with both parents at the same time using video calls. Skype provides a picture-in-a-picture video feed. I can see the parents and also monitor the video of me that they are seeing and vice versa.
Using Skype is efficient and allows me to build relationships with parents worldwide, bridging borders and time zones. It's also environmentally-friendly. Parents do not incur costs or waste time travelling to and from my office for coaching sessions, and experience has shown that parents are more comfortable and relaxed during our meetings when they are in their own homes, which is particularly helpful for dealing with children facing challenges. Video calls allow for a minimum of disruption in the lives of the parents. With Skype, I can help more people and keep my costs down, permitting me to make my services more affordable for parents.
