My work over the last 15 years as a college professor and supervisor of students in specialized education has provided me with great insight into the precarious, un-energizing methods oftentimes applied with special needs kids' within our educational system today.
On many occasions, during my supervisory work in schools, I have been witness to inappropriate, abusive language, punishment displayed as a means of "normalizing" challenging behavioural kids. Here are but a few examples:
• Autistic, ADHD kids totally isolated for lengthy periods;
• Kids convened in front of a "jury" (composed of teachers, school director, psychologist, social worker) and literally drilled concerning his/her misdemeanours;
• Teachers openly rebuking children in class for daydreaming, academic weaknesses, poor information processing.
I consider that a re-thinking, a re-vamping of interpersonal communicational and social models presently in place in our academic system will bring to light the misguided, and at times, inappropriate strategies applied to "break" a difficult child's behaviour.
Without stating that our public school system is inadvertent in its management of our difficult children, a new social curriculum is imperative that meets the challenges of today's classrooms.
My work as an ADHD parent coach and certified trainer in the Nurtured Heart Approach consists of developing and enhancing the child's learning and psychosocial skills at home as well as at school. By doing so, we enhance the child's inner wealth, increase the child's confidence, self-awareness, awareness of others and the child's need for recognition and appreciation.
"Normal" ways of parenting and teaching ADHD children are totally inadequate in that problems increase, relationship and success get very little recognition. ADHD children have difficulty in drawing upon their capacity for greatness and success if what we shower them with, accentuates only their challenging patterns.
The Nurtured Heart Approach, a very empowering tool with which I work, is the cornerstone to igniting the greatness of our children. In nurturing only their success experiences on a daily basis, you will be amazed to see how your difficult children redefine their inner desires to do well and get along at home as well as at school.
Intense children can't wait to be exposed to an ADHD friendly environment in which they feel lifted up, appreciated and recognized for their strengths and inner wealth. They will totally nurture themselves in the Greatness of this present moment with you.
